RECONCILING ART
AND BUSINESS
A STUDY ON HOW FILIPINO GRAPHIC DESIGNERS NEGOTIATE THEIR INDIVIDUAL DESIGN WITH CLIENT NEEDS AND PREFERENCES
HERE'S TO EVERY FILIPINO
GRAPHIC DESIGNER
We, as graphic designers in the Philippines, may be constrained by institutional and corporate protocols,
as well as the preferences of our clients. Creating and perfecting our craft entail constant and complex negotiations between us and our clients. Indeed, our artistry is a reconstructed piece of individual creative expression intertwined to the corporate branding and client’s perspective. This research focuses on how
Filipino graphic designers negotiate their individual design with client needs and preferences.
Our role as graphic designers is constantly changing. In order for us to thrive and realize our full potential, we must understand that our true value is measured not just by fulfilling corporate functions or client demands, but also by expressing the uniqueness of, and passion for our art.
With the global recognition of design thinking, we must hold our position in the knowledge economy, seeking to provide a competitive edge over and above creating pixels. I simply want to help every Filipino graphic designer to uphold the level of professionalism by shifting their mindset from order-taker to consultant and strategic partner. They must recognize the importance of valuing their thoughts and the negotiation along the process, but always envisioning and commanding the room as well as leading their clients.
